Position Summary
The Studio Assistant – Cooking is responsible for supporting Folk School staff in the cooking program including occasionally greeting instructors to facilitate orientation, IT and safety training; cleaning and setting studios for upcoming classes, attending to instructor and class needs that may arise during the week, and supporting staff with annual deep cleaning, equipment maintenance, and end of year inventory. The Studio Assistant – Cooking reports directly to the Studio Manager and is a part-time, up to 5 hrs/wk, nonexempt hourly position. Must be available to work weekends and holidays. Hours may vary based on business need, but most scheduled time will occur on Saturdays and Sundays.
Position Responsibilities:
- Assist Cooking Studio Coordinator with cleaning and resetting studios between classes.
- Identify items that need to be restocked.
- Assist with annual deep cleaning of studios.
- Assist with annual inventory of tools and equipment.
- Help to support programming staff on projects to enhance studios when feasible.
- Assist with maintenance of studio equipment and upkeep of tools.
- Occasionally greet instructors and provide studio orientation on an as needed basis.
Education and Experience:
- Basic knowledge and understanding of how to maintain a fully equipped kitchen and associated equipment and tools (mixers, food-processors, commercial ovens, sanitizer, wood-fired ovens, hearth).
- A basic understanding of food safety and hygiene.
Position Skills and Aptitudes:
- Attention to detail.
- Ability to maintain a consistent level of cleanliness in the studio from week to week.
- Ability to communicate questions, concerns, or problems effectively.
- Ability to run basic diagnostics on malfunctioning equipment, complete basic repairs, and describe issues with studio equipment.
- Ability to communicate clearly with instructors and students using a tactful and thoughtful approach.
- Willingness to learn.
Physical Demands
This position requires that the employee be able to walk unaided up and down hills and over uneven terrain, bend, stoop, and use fine and gross motor skills. The work of this position frequently requires the use of hands to handle or touch objects, tools, or controls. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move heavy objects, tables, or equipment, up to 40 pounds. This position requires the ability to climb step stools or ladders to reach high shelves. In addition, visual acuity is needed to examine surfaces and equipment for cleanliness. Must be able to work weekends and holidays. This position requires fluency in English.
Pay & Benefits
The pay for this position is approximately $15.00 per hour. In addition, the Folk School offers all employees a free class annually.
