Artist Name: Pamela Palma

Artist Bio: Pamela Palma is a professional fiber artist with 40+ years as a working studio artist. She is known for her use of rich, vibrant colors and lush textures, and for her use of unexpected materials in her mixed media works. She describes her distinctive style as Contemporary Tradition. Her fiber journey began when she learned to knit and sew by hand as a child. Over the years she became proficient in embroidery, fashion design, and eventually weaving. Her signature genre of mixed media features her renowned “Money Weavings.” Additionally, her hand wovens encompass tapestry and fiber art wall panels, table linens, apparel and accessories, which she designs herself (no computer programs) and weaves on her assortment of looms: two huge floor looms, several table looms, countless hand looms, and a full array of sewing equipment. Previously a Miami Beach resident, in 2015 she founded PLY-Miami Fiber Art Guild to bridge cultural diversity among the populations of textile artists in South Florida. During the pandemic while sheltering in place, she orchestrated the making of an enormous, 12’ x 20’ textile mural of Julia Tuttle – the only woman who ever founded a city in the US – who founded the City of Miami in 1896 but was unable to vote for incorporation because of her gender. The mural, comprised entirely of handmade textile components by local women, honors an outstanding woman of herstory by using traditional women’s’ work – knitting, crochet, stitchery, and quilting – was exhibited at History Miami Museum in 2021-2022. (See Julia Tuttle the Mural on her website, link below.) Currently a resident of North Carolina, Ms. Palma’s work is leaning into a mountain sensibility. Her outstanding Autumn Table Runner, woven on her floor loom in vibrant autumn hues, received a Silver Medal from Cherokee and Clay Counties’ Silver Arts competition. Her works in the John C. Campbell Folk School Auction represent the abundance of magnificent, mountain waterfalls of Western North Carolina.
Her work is exhibited in galleries and museums, and is in private collections. More info: www.pamelpalmadesigns.com, Instagram @Pamela Palma Designs, Facebook – Pamela Palma Designs, In person – Pamela Palma Designs studio/gallery at Cherokee County Arts Council, Murphy, NC.
