Opportunities & Discounts

Building on your feedback, and our desire to provide meaningful experiences for neighbors in surrounding counties, we're pleased to announce new opportunities and discounts for locals, teachers, and young adults. Our revised program structure will better accommodate our local community members' needs.

Opportunities for Local Residents in 2022

For classes scheduled July 2022 and beyond, the Folk School is proud to offer 25% off tuition and a guaranteed spot upon registration to people living in the following counties:

North Carolina: Cherokee, Clay, Macon, Swain, and Graham
Georgia: Fannin, Towns, Union
Tennessee: Polk

Those looking to receive this benefit are required to present one of the following, showing proof of local address: a valid driver's license, voter registration card, tax bill, or utility bill.

For classes scheduled July 2022 and beyond, the Folk School is also offering 15% off tuition for Teachers and Young Adults (18-25).

Teachers must present proof of current certification and/or employment as a teacher working in a school or school setting. Young Adults are required to submit a valid driver's license or government-issued identification showing proof of age.

This program applies to classes starting in July 2022 and onward. January-June 2022 classes are not eligible for this discount and will not have spots available via standby.

This new initiative replaces our standby program that ended in late 2021. Many residents said our standby options didn't allow enough time to plan their visits. In addition, some residents were disappointed that they were not able to attend a class they truly wanted to take.

The Folk School has an abundance of scholarships available for those in need. Scholarships provide partial or full financial support for tuition, housing, and meals for a weeklong or weekend class.

Our scholarship application is simple and straightforward. There's no financial paperwork needed. Applications are open year-round, and scholarships are awarded on an ongoing basis.

There's no universal deadline but apply as soon as you can! If you apply too close to your class start date, there may not be space available.

Most scholarships are not merit-based but are awarded to those who demonstrate financial need and admiration for the Folk School's unique education model. Young adults, lifelong learners, craftspeople who have never attended the Folk School, and those facing financial hurdles are encouraged to apply.

Scholarship applications for 2022 classes are available here.
