A Typical Week or Weekend

Nestled on 270 acres in an enchanted valley, the Folk School offers those who are visiting the area a chance to experience a unique blend of history, art, and natural beauty.

Your Folk School Experience

Welcome to the John C. Campbell Folk School!

The Folk School offers a unique opportunity to step away from the pace of everyday life and immerse yourself in creativity, community, and Appalachian culture.

Here, learning happens through hands-on experiences, shared traditions, and meaningful connections with others. Whether you’re exploring a new craft, enjoying the natural beauty of campus, or gathering with fellow participants over meals and music, you’ll find inspiration, fellowship, and a sense of belonging woven into daily life at the Folk School.

During your stay, you can start the day surrounded by the peaceful sounds of our secluded mountains. Take a walk on our campus paths, or on trails through the woods or by the stream.

Discover Morningsong in the historic Keith House Community Room. This Danish custom of singing, folklore, and camaraderie will bring you into a community – sharing songs, stories, and history.

Folk School staff will work hard to provide you with a positive Folk School experience of learning and sharing. Dining Hall staff will serve healthy and plentiful meals made fresh every day.

In the studio, you will learn by doing, at your own pace. Small class size allows for personalized, one-on-one instruction with plenty of time for individual practice. No matter your experience or skill level, you will be amazed by what you create and the friendships you forge. Morning and afternoon classes are separated by a long lunch break, allowing more time for fellowship.

Evening offers you the opportunity to join a campus tour, enjoy a late afternoon stroll in the garden, or spend some quiet time on your own before supper. We find ways to fill the evenings with dance and music performances, readings by students and visiting writers, storytellers, and other special programming.

On the last day, we gather for a closing ceremony and student exhibit, allowing each class to showcase their work and celebrate the crafts, skills, friends, and memories made.

As you depart, we hope you will have experienced a taste of the culture, tradition, and history of the Appalachians, and you will leave with inspiration and renewal that can only be found at John C. Campbell Folk School.
