JCCFS: Tell us a little bit about yourself. What’s your background in your medium? How did you get started?
JG: I have been a photographer and educator for over 35 years and have inspired hundreds of students to pursue their dream of photography. I am a Master of Photography, Photographic Craftsman, and a Certified Professional Photographer (CPP) and CPP Instructor. My students have earned the title of Best Photography Student in the nation and in individual states. My students will have a passion to push their photography to the limits.
JCCFS: Tell us more about your class’s specific technique or process.
JG: We will do multiple trips to various locations to practice all aspects of photography such as macro, closeup, flash, telephoto, nature, landscape, documentary, portraits and astrophotography. We will go out and then we will process our work as a group to collaborate on how to create works of art. Students will have the option to print their work.

JCCFS: What can students expect to leave your class with?
JG: A new appreciation for photography and the ability to entertain themselves with the art of photography. They will also have prints of their favorite creations from the week.
JCCFS: What do you enjoy most about The Folk School?
JG: I love the feeling of community and oneness of the Folk School. It inspires me and I look forward to every minute on campus. Also, I am a foodie so love the family style dining.
JCCFS: Where do you draw inspiration for your work?
JG: My work inspires me because many times I am surprised at what I can create. Many times it is behind the camera and other times it is behind the computer. I can never tell where my inspiration will come from it may be the location, subject, time or smell.
JCCFS: What’s one piece or craft object you’ve made recently that you are proud of, and why?
JG: I photographed a lobsterman at the end of his day. He is paddling away from his lobster boat toward the pier and you can see the other boats, the city and fog. It emotionally gets me every time I look at it.
JCCFS: What tips would you give a student or aspiring craftsperson? Anything you wish you had known earlier in your career?
JG: Just keep on shooting. You have to shoot, shoot and then shoot. The technique has to become second nature to your ability to create art.
JCCFS: Where can folks find you if they want to stay up to date on your work?
