JCCFS: How long have you been an instructor at the Folk School?
NH:I have been teaching at the folk school for over 25 years. I teach quilting, baskets, and rugs. I am teaching this class in place of David Baker, one of our beloved community members and instructors who passed away earlier this year, which is quite an honor!
JCCFS: Tell us more about your class coming up. What makes a quilt a Kaleidoscope Quilt?
NH: Students will start with a large scale, multi-colored print fabric. By using a particular method of stacking, cutting, and arranging the fabric’s pattern motifs, magical kaleidoscope blocks appear during the piecing. Each block of your quilt will be unique even though it uses the same fabric!

JCCFS: What can students expect to leave your class with?
NH: Students will create several blocks, which they can stitch together to make a table runner or wall hanging. More ambitious students will have the opportunity to sew additional blocks to make a larger piece, such as a bed-sized quilt top.
JCCFS: What is your favorite aspect of the John C. Campbell Folk School?
NH: To me, the folk school is all about community: sharing, learning, laughing, eating — we do it all as a community!
JCCFS: Where do you draw inspiration from for your work?
NH: My students and fellow teachers inspire me in all aspects of my life.
JCCFS: What’s one piece you’ve made recently that you are particularly proud of?
NH: A friend that I met almost 20 years ago here at the Folk School passed away suddenly. Her daughter asked me to finish the wedding quilt her mom had started. I was honored and humbled to be able to do this!
JCCFS: Any tips for aspiring quilters or craftspeople?
NH: Keep playing!
JCCFS: Where can folks find more about you and your work?
NH: On my website: fiberartsstudio.com.

Kaleidoscope Quilts
January 19-24, 2025
Imagine making a quilt where every beautiful block is different. The kaleidoscope effect produces a quilt that looks intricate but is deceptively easy to cut and piece. Work alongside the instructor to create your own unique design where the possibilities are endless—all from one piece of fabric. Students should be proficient with rotary cutting and sewing on a machine.
