Excitement is building for the 48th annual John C. Campbell Folk School Fall Festival, this October 5th and 6th. Banners are up, and all over Brasstown there’s the sound of ukuleles practicing, banjos tuning, Morris dancing, saws and hammers, forges firing, looms shuttling and more. What’s so special about the Folk School Fall Festival that it draws over 10,000 folks to this beautiful 270-acre campus? It’s home-grown heart on a grand scale. 

Over 225 craft vendors plan all year, hand-making every item for sale. Food vendors roll out their home-made goodies with gusto. Music, dance and craft demos bring the real Appalachia. And starting last year, our very own Folk School garden grew every pumpkin, mum and bale of hay used in our famous and glorious decorations, thanks to Gardener Jason Ebinger and his crew of Garden Work Studies.

One of the Folk School’s values is Stewardship. It was felt that using their own natural resources in the expansive Folk School garden made sense. The sustainability of the flowers and fruit could be monitored and enforced. To top it off, after the event all the pumpkins were collected and processed into squash for future dining hall fare! The past year saw delicious side dishes, casseroles and desserts from this bounty added to the farm-to-table meals served daily to students in the Folk School Dining Hall.
