JCCFS: Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background. How did you get started?
JB:I am a mid-career professional with a background in baking and pastry food service management from Johnson & Wales University. With extensive experience managing bars and a WSET Level 2 certification in spirits, I have developed a strong understanding of the wine and spirits industry. As a former brand ambassador for a North Carolina gin company, I gained valuable skills in brand representation and market growth. Currently, I work as a sales representative for a liquor distribution company, where I utilize my expertise to drive sales and build lasting client relationships in the competitive beverage market.
JCCFS: Tell us more about your class’s specific technique or process.
JB: We will learn how to mix, shake, and match cocktails for your next holiday event or any kind of party. Explore the different types of spirits and understand the reasons for choosing specific ingredients in cocktails over others.
JCCFS: What can students expect to leave your class with?
JB:This class provides an in-depth look at essential bar tools and techniques, from crafting classic cocktails to adding unique twists. You’ll learn how to infuse syrups and spirits for enhanced flavors and explore Spirits 101, covering the basics of grain selection, distillation, and fermentation. Perfect for those eager to refine their bartending skills and deepen their understanding of spirits, this class is ideal for both beginners and seasoned professionals in the beverage industry.
JCCFS: What is your favorite aspect or part of the Folk School? What do you most look forward to when coming back to teach on our campus?
JB: I love the small enthusiastic classes, hands on learning and being able to help everyone in the class.
JCCFS: Where do you draw inspiration from for your work?
JB:I focus on using local and sustainable ingredients in cocktails whenever possible. I value education and believe it’s important to know the origins of what I am drinking.
JCCFS: Where can folks find you if they would like to stay up to date on your current work?
JB: Instagram is the best way. JaQuanb
