Teaching at the Folk School |
The Folk School Teaching Model
Grounded in the Danish Folk School tradition, we emphasize non-competitive, hands-on learning in an encouraging and supportive environment. We do not give grades and there are no exams. Emphasis is placed on forming bonds through communal living and learning. Our focus is on developing skills that will lead to a higher level of craftsmanship over time rather than on the final product.
Our Instructors
Our pool of over 800 instructors ranges from traditional artisans to practicing studio artists and arts educators. Whether they are a professional artist or a scientist who moonlights as a blacksmith, our instructors share a high level of craftsmanship, a passion for what they do, and an ability to inspire and uplift students of all skill levels. We expect our instructors to embody the values of the Folk School which are joy, kindness, stewardship, and non-competitive learning. We take educational and professional experience into account when considering new instructors, as well as their ability to provide a cultural and historical context to their craft. Familiarity with the Folk School is helpful as a first-time instructor.
