Every summer the Folk School opens its doors to young folks ages 7-17 for Little/Middle Folk School, an opportunity for youths to discover Appalachian culture and to take part in hand-on programs in dozens of arts and crafts. Little/Middle is scheduled for June 21-27, 2020.
Participants are divided into two groups. "Littles" are rising second-graders to rising sixth-graders, and "Middles" are rising seventh-graders to rising twelfth-graders (minimum age 11). Littles take 4 classes and Middles take 2 classes out of nearly 30 youth classes.
Applications for Little/Middle 2020 will be available March 17 at 9 am on this page. Deadline to apply is March 20 by 9 am. *Little Middle Applications are closed.
A preview of classes will be available on this page on March 10. Space is limited and we usually reach capacity with a waitlist. We recommend that you sign up as soon as possible once applications are open.
Program Policies & Online Application
Applications for Little/Middle must be submitted online. If you need assistance submitting your application, the Programming Department is available to assist you. Please call Programming at 828-837-2775 in advance to coordinate.
There are 15 little classes and 16 middle classes to choose from. Please mark all class choices on your application in order of priority (1 through 15 for Littles and 1 through 16 for Middles, 1 being your first choice).
You can register up to 4 children little or middle on one application. If you would like to register more than 4 children, you will need to fill out an additional application form.
Class assignments are final. Students cannot switch classes. We do our very best to accommodate each child's top choice.
Commuting students are required to bring a sack lunch. Please put your child's name on their lunch bag. Drinks will be provided by the Folk School. If staying on campus, meals are included with the purchase of housing and meals.
Drop off and pick up will be in the Festival Barn for all students.
Class begins at 9:05 am and ends at 3:30 pm. Local students must be picked up no later than 4:30 pm. No aftercare program is available.
Tuition for Little/Middle is $150 per child. Housing and meals are not included. If housing and meals are desired for a student, they are required to be accompanied by an adult.
A deposit of $30 is required in order to complete the online application. If accepted, the $30 will be deducted from the tuition balance due. If you are not accepted, you will be placed on a wait list. You may contact us at any time to remove yourself from the wait list and receive a full refund.
If accepted, you will receive a confirmation of acceptance by email from the Folk School by April 8th.
If accepted, a confirmation of a class schedule and materials list will be mailed at the end of April.
Little/Middle Cancellation Policy: If a student cancels before May 22, 2020, their registration fee will be refunded. No refunds will be made after May 22, 2020. If a student must be removed from the program due to a discipline problem, no refund will be given.
